-Small piece off of friend's cheesecake

It looks worse written down than it did earlier. Sigh. I estimate that I ate at least 2,000 calories today. Tomorrow is another day, if you fall off get right back on, blah blah blah.

I read two of Dean Ornish's cookbooks. I started re-reading Vineland and fell asleep, overcome by nausea. I have an 8am conference call with Germany. I'm not really very happy at the moment.

I am watching Alias again. I am up to episode 17, and I am losing interest. How much longer can they drag this out? I will probably watch all the episodes just to see. B is doing something in the dining room with wires and it is making a squeaky whining sound. I've always liked the word "soldering".

I've given up drinking! Rah! I was drinking WAY too much. Today is day 7. Go me. It's day 11 if you don't count the wine i had at my last wine and cheese soiree, which I planned before i gave up drinking. I'm also vegan again, and it is day 11 on that sucker too. Day 7 etc. PS. I start drinking again October 1.

I gave up trying to spend less money. It was no fun. I need to change the name of this blog. Heh. I just thought of a great one.

Did you know that I have an IQ of 160? Fat lot of good it does me. I finally start getting into a regular running pattern and this is what I get. Up at 1am with a piercing pain in my back. I have no idea what this pain behind my shoulder blade has to do with running, but when i didn't run, i didn't get it.

I ordered two black tweed jackets from Nordstrom yesterday. Beyond that and the usual food and drink, I haven't spent any money. Oh, it was my parents' anniversary, so I sent them flowers and balloons. But that is all.

Weekend

Let me see. Friday night I had a dinner party, and that set me back about $300. It was a lot of fun, though. I made spaghetti with marinara sauce (it simmered for two hours and was DELICIOUS!), garlic bread, had lots of olives and cheese and wine. I stuck candles in chianti bottles and put out a red and white checked tablecloth. :D

Saturday was the company picnic, which I went to for the first time ever. It was actually ok. After that, Summer and I went to Zeitgeist (cocktails in pint glasses) for the rest of the day. That ended up costing about $60 what with dinner and all.

The next day I went bead shopping with Denise. That was about $50. We had lunch at Barneys (I had a tofu burger, yum), another $15.

I WAS going to look at sheets on ebay, but now that I realise how much I spent last weekend, I think I'll skip it. Yikes.

Well, I haven't been spending much money lately. I've been working too hard and now I have high blood pressure, so I'm on a fairly restrictive diet. If I hadn't been working too hard to spend money, no doubt none of this would have happened. Spending money is correlated with health! I can't eat any more caffeine, alcohol, extra sugar or salt, or any animal products except fat-free yogurt. I've been on it for two weeks now.

I went for a run yesterday morning and then went across the bridge to hang out with Denise. We beaded a necklace for me, and drank vodka and cranberry juice with our nachos. Yeah, not at ALL part of the diet. One day at a time, though, right? Today was better, as I went for a long run on the beach and am sticking to the diet for the forseeable future.

I did go to the Sports Basement this morning for a new tshirt and pants for running. All my running clothes seem to disappear. I bought only stuff that was on sale, so the tshirt was $10 and the pants $14.

For the rest of the day, I plan to read my last library book and eat a bunch of potatoes with salsa.

i went out tonight with denise and summer. whenever i go out with summer i get drunk. we drank caipirinhas tonight and ate tapas. denise's ex and my husband were there too.
i haven't spent other money lately. working too hard.

Well, let me see.
A firewire cable for my ipod. iTrip. Lunch for me, Summer and Denise at Fresh Choice.
Fahrenheit 9/11 tickets for Summer, Denise, Leela, Theresa and myself. Go see it. I stayed awake through the whole thing, much more than i can say for Bowling for Columbine.
Household items and groceries. I use Pantene conditioner. It really works!

Money saved:
I went to the library again instead of buying books.
Haven't eaten out all week, except for that one lunch.
No alcohol at all. That probably saved thousands this week alone.
The rest of the time, i've been working. So, this week, I was pretty good. I sold some stock so I might actually have come out ahead this week. Rah.
I hung the SFMOMA photograph in my office, where I enjoy it many times every day. I'd say it was well, well worth the $850.
Oh! And i decided that it is simply unwise to buy the latest fashions every season only to have to throw them away in a matter of weeks, so I am saving money for my first Chanel jacket.

Goals

I think I need to set some goals.
I am doing OK with avoiding ebay. I am eating better (lost 3 pounds this week). Work is about as good as I can make it right now. I'm also doing ok on the "no purchases over $25 without 24 hours thought first." I waited a whole week before I bought that short orange cargo skirt at Eddie Bauer.
I'd like to make it to meditation once this month.
I'd like to run at least three times a week. The drugs I'm on make me sleep late so maybe I'll try cutting back on those so I can get up early for a run. I feel so much better when I run.
I think that's enough for the goals, for now.

A slight improvement

So much to say; so little time.

I spent little on Thursday and Friday of that week. My aunt had a heart attack early Thursday morning, right around the time I was dreaming of her yelling at me for giving my parents such a hard time when I was younger (dude, it was like 20 years ago, get over it!). So it's my fault, getting her all riled up like that. Anyway, I bought a flight to Vegas (they've always lived there, so I've seen a lot of Vegas, enough to know that gambling is for SUCKERS who don't understand how to REALLY spend money) and booked myself a room in the cheapest decent hotel in town, which turned out to be the MGM Grand. Lordy, I remember the days when $25 would buy you a room and a huge steak dinner, and that was in the 80's. Maybe now that Vegas has given up on their ill-advised (stupid) attempt to become a family friendly vacation mecca (yeah, losing Mum and Dad's paychecks at blackjack and exploiting women is FAMILY FRIENDLY), prices will once again go down as a draw for the schmucks, and when I want to visit the Mom's twin sister I can stay independently and for cheap. But I digress.

Long story short, Aunt is fine after the triple bypass. A bit sore, but well. During the surgery, I had to distract my cousin (genetically my half-sister, mind you) by taking her shopping. It was my filial duty. We went to TJ Maxx (zip), Nordstrom Rack (she got shoes, I got a white top), and the new outlet mall off Charleston (I bought three skirts and four t-shirts at Ann Taylor and a long jacket at Max Studio, she wasn't there because she had to go back to her law practice in NY). Yeah. I lost $4 in the slots at the airport waiting for my plane back home. Shoulda quit when I was ahead.

This week, I'm trying to save. I went out after work on Wednesday with Summer to try the flight of wines by women winemakers at A16. It was good enough but turned out to be all whites, which aren't my favorite. So we left after that for Nectar (http://www.nectarwinelounge.com) where we both had the bubblies flight along with scallops, the cheese plate, and a dungeness crab filled tamale. And then Summer had a red flight. We walked past the Wine Merchant on the way back to the car, where they had a bar as well, so stopped in there for more reds for Summer and a dessert wine by Topaz for myself. That was about $60 or so for me, all told.

Friday night we went to see Sonny Rollins, which we'd already paid for, and yesterday Denise had a party so I bought some portobello mushrooms and gin at a negligible cost. Not a bad week, really.

I spent $160 today BECAUSE i finally got the one month pass for yoga. And then they repaid me by making me try to do a handstand and humiliate myself in front of the whole class. DUDE. It was just like being back in high school gym class. All those memories came flooding back.

But I got my revenge when I did a splendid pose that I can't find a picture of, but is something like this only more sideways.

I also finally paid for the damn photograph.

Oh, I spent $10 on lunch. That was veggie spring rolls and a thai mushroom salad, which was way better than it sounds. There was a lot of fresh mint in it. I love mint.

I managed to hoodwink Denise into coming to yoga with me tomorrow. Yay!

By the way. I am a radiant creature regardless of my external circumstances. Nyah.

Here's an interesting article in today's NY Times about the ethics of spending lots of money on an occasional good meal. I felt a little better after reading it.

Today I bought a bag of cat food (Eukanuba), Feline Pine cat litter, two bags of assorted furry mice toys, and six small tins of cat food. $40.

After yoga yesterday, every muscle in my body hurts. Muscles I have never used and muscles I never imagined.

I spent four hours at work today, and I get to go back and do it again tomorrow!

Thursday night I took Summer to dinner. It cost - wait for it - $420. For two.

However. Friday I spent nothing at all! and I even went to the mall with Denise! She wanted my fashion advice. I am her fashion consultant now. We found some great pants for her, too! blue pinstripe ones and orange cargo pants, and she looks great in them. I'm happy that I focused on HER style and not my own. And I didn't spend a penny. Not a single penny. I am the greatest.

In addition, we had a grand old time making a list of stuff we wanted at pottery barn/williams sonoma, b/c Summer can get us a 40 percent discount. Think of all the money we'll be saving!

Today I'm going to yoga, and that'll be about $35. It's not really saving any money, but it will be good for me.

What do I wear to yoga? Uh oh.

Been busy at work. Bought nothing yesterday or today, but i'm going to dinner tonight, so that'll be pricey. I promised Summer I'd take her to dinner for checking on my cats while I was gone.
I drove past the outlet mall yesterday and didn't even go in. Rah!

I decided to sign up for yoga. I'm not running and I don't see getting up early in the morning in my future. So, three weeks of yoga classes for me. Maybe I'll like it.

I forgot the Hard Tail dress I bought on ebay. But it was only $20.
Turns out, on closer reading, that the email I got was a fraud, and my acount was not actually disabled. Good thing I didn't check into that immediately -- it saved me two weeks' worth of bidding! But I was so heady from my Hawaii trip that I forgot my vow to ebay no more 'til September, and I bid on a gorgeous little ribbed tshirt dress, which I promptly won. But I swear, I won't ebay again, not 'til 9/1. Unless I'm selling and raking in the dough, that is!

Oh my Lord. I'm all flustered now. How do they know where I am? How did they find me? And how did they know how fabulous I am, from my few short posts?

Well! I must say that this blog was never intended for public consumption, but I suppose it was inevitable that I be discovered. To all my new fans, I've been in Hawaii, spending lots and lots of money. I did not post because I bought, and because I sunned. And swam, and ate, and drank (what is it about mai tais that makes them so good in that one particular state?).

Dear Max, that is Patsy, but I forgive you, because you are one of my heroes. E=hf!

Woke up, had three cups of tea (paid for in advance on my last trip to Vancouver, and my last trip to Cala Foods).
OH MY GOD. I won the photograph. That's $863 (including tax). I just remembered. I'm, uh, thrilled.
Anyway. Walked down to the library to return some overdue books ($1.61). They were closed due to Memorial Day, so I was prevented from further debt to the city. Since I'd been away so long, I thought I'd wander over to Haight St and see what the kids had been up to while I was gone.

Turned out Goodwill was having a 50% off sale, so I picked up five new books (Ellen Gilchrist, Alison Lurie, Anne Lamott, Jane Hamilton, and another woman who turned out to be such a horrible writer that I refuse to type her name.) and a couple pairs of Banana Republic shorts. All that for $11.75! And I can turn right around and sell the shorts on ebay for a profit. See? I'm always thinkin'.

Then I was ripped off for a cup of iced coffee at $2.25 at Coffee, Tea and Spice.

The Gap lured me in with their colorful display of tank tops. Since they were $15 each, I refused to buy a single one. But I did buy a $9.99 v-neck pink t-shirt with a floral pattern, two coolMax type t-shirts in lavendar and purple, two pair of cargo pants (black and olive green) at $17 each, and one pair of black sweatpants for $16. And a pin with my initial. All that = $75! Even the cashier was amazed at how much I got for so little money!

Continuing down the street, where not much has changed, I stopped in at a newish store with skateboards on the wall, where I escaped having spent only $22 on a single t-shirt. It was an Analog shirt! and pink! C'mon, you know I had to have it. I didn't buy anything else until I hit the Lower Haight, but I did stop off at home to change into the olive cargo pants and a shirt that I got at the Vancouver Art Museum (by Smoking Lily. As Tiffany, my shopping muse, noted, now that I'm famous I can plug all my favorite designers! yay!). Much more stylish than the ugly Eddie Bauer black polo shirt and sweatpants I had been wearing. I had to go to Walgreens, so I walked all the way down there, but it was closed for the holiday, so I dropped into Upper Playground and dropped another $50. Their MUNI shirts are ART. It's an investment. Like the Len Rubenstien photograph! I better get apartment insurance!

And - honestly - that's it. For today.

no lunch. there was a BBQ after work so that was free too.
Tomorrow: HAWAII. I'm almost sorry I'm going because after I get back, there won't be anything to look forward to.

I only worked from 8 to 5 today. Wooooo! Two more days to Hawaii.

I went for a run today after work. It was fun, too.

So today... let me see... i spent about $1 on diet cokes. I think that's all! I was too busy to spend any money. I worked from 8am to 7pm. Not uncommon these days.

I ate,hrm, 3 handfuls of M&Ms and a bowl of spaghetti (and the diet cokes). And a gin and tonic that my husband had waiting for me when i got home, along with the spaghetti. He's the best husband in the whole world.

I wanted to go for a run this morning but I was too sleepy to get up early. Then I meant to go after work but was too tired. Sigh. Maybe tomorrow morning?

I Just Saved Money!

I just saved $12.57 by cancelling an order at Amazon for "Expelled from Eden: A William T. Vollmann Reader" that I had placed. I'm getting it out of the library instead.

So far I have spent $2 on a tall nonfat light vanilla latte from Starbucks. Thanks to my insurance, my dental cleaning was free this morning. I have not bought a single other thing. Except a $3 salad for lunch and a fifty cent diet coke.

I did win a voodoo flag after all. It was about $30. And a poncho, for about $25. I can take the poncho to Hawaii, at least. Here's the good news: I have not bid on anything else!

I had my legs and eyebrows waxed today. That was about $70, but I've planned that since I made the reservations for Hawaii.

OMG, Janice punched the crap out of some soccer mom. Hilarious.

I paid $6 for a nonfat latte for me and a chai for Summer this morning. I didn't get any money out of the ATM, though. I also didn't buy lunch today, as it was catered in to one of my meetings. So that also means I had a crappy chicken salad sandwich with mayonnaise and a bag of fatfree chips and half a cookie. Blah. For dinner I went home and ate a can of refried beans with salsa and fat-free yogurt. And one gin and tonic because we had the gin and tonic lying around.

So I spent $131 today. And I saved nothing.

Maybe I should make a plan.

Part I: No more ebay until September 1.
Part II: No more purchases over $25 without 24 hours thought first.

Let's see how that works.

Criminy. Crikey. I should just call this "What I Bought Today." :(
I went to the Asian Art Museum with Steve and B, and I bought a book called "Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction" from the Oxford Press, and a deck of "Tao cards" for fun.
I also bought a t-shirt on ebay. Here's a picture. I haven't won any of the Voodoo flags, though, so that's good. That would save me about $50. So minus the $20 for the shirt (including shipping), I come out about even for the day. STILL THOUGH. This has to stop... I should confiscate my own credit card. At least I'm just down to one now!

What I Ate Today: A bowl of carrots, cauliflower and broccoli for breakfast, with Earl's barbecue sauce on it. Lunch: a cup of Peet's coffee with milk, a plain small bun and half a red bean bun. Dinner: two small baked potatoes with non-fat yogurt and Bac-Os. Bac-Os are made of soy! No meat whatsoever! Amazing. Dessert: one serving of Ben and Jerry's Low Fat Cherry Garcia yogurt. And a handful of dry pasta as a snack when i was starving waiting for the potatoes to bake. I guess today was better in the food department than the money department.

Today I managed to possibly spend money without even getting out of bed.
I bid on a few Haitian flags on ebay. I've always wanted to collect them, and now I can afford to. I think. Yikes. Maybe I won't win, though. That would save money.
I ALMOST joined the Buddhist Peace Fellowship for $45, but thought better of it. I should have not bid on ebay and joined the BPF instead.

HOWEVER! I put 20 books on hold at the library instead of going out and buying new ones, like I would normally do. So money saved there: LOTS! I love being able to put books on hold online! It's so much fun!

Let's say for today, so far, I've saved about $40. And I still haven't gotten out of bed.

First, what I might have bought. I bid $850 on a large framed photograph in a silent auction at SFMOMA. I probably won't win, though. Estimated selling price is $2000. I bid for it as a gift for my husband, B, who is a photographer.

I DID buy dinner for three at Axum. Usually it's very cheap, but we had two bottles of honey wine and an extra plate of their vegetarian special, so it was about $70 with tip.

I also bought two books at the SFMOMA shop, one about creativity and one called "ArtSITES" that lists all the cool public art around the city. I think that purchase was ok.

I also purchased a 14x17" pad of tracing paper and some pencils for my next art project. I'm not going to tell you about it in case someone steals my idea.

So, What I Did Not Buy Today: Nothing. :(
